
First Rounder Comes to Boise

Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, ID - The Chicago Cubs first round draft pick of 2011 will be joining the Boise Hawks today. SS Javier Baez was the 9th overall draft pick from this year's Major League Baseball Amateur draft. The first rounder is a six-foot, 180 lb. righty out of Arlington Country Day High School in Jacksonville, Florida. The 18 year old was born 12/01/92. Baez is coming to the Hawks from Mesa after signing with the Cubs this month.
There are also four more additions to the Hawks, as well as three players who are no longer on the roster. CF Pin-Chieh Chen and RHP Yao-Lin Wang returned to Taiwan to play for the national team there, and C Mario Mercedes was sent up to the triple-A Iowa Cubs. Joining the team will be right-handed pitchers Michael Jensen, James Pugliese, and Tony Zych. All three are draft picks from this season and are coming up from Mesa. Zych is 6-3, 190 lbs. and the fourth round pick out of the University of Louisville. Pugliese is an 18th rounder from Mercer County Community College in New Jersey, also 6-3, but 195 lbs. Jensen is 6-1, 185 lbs. and is the Cubs 26th round draft pick out of Hartnell Community College in California. OF Kyung-Min Na is also rejoining the team from Mesa.

The Hawks began Northwest League play as an independent club from 1987-89. The team was affiliated with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim from 1990-2000 and has been with the Chicago Cubs since 2001. The club has won 6 NWL Championships, the most recent banner coming in 2004.
