Bears Player Named to All-Star Team

August 30, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears have received word from the Northwest League that infielder Jimmy Comerota has been named the 2011 Northwest League All-Star Team.

Now in his second season with the Bears, Comerota has flourished as an everyday player leading into the season's final series.

Comerota has the fourth best batting average in the NWL at .319 in 54 games played. Comerota has hit 10 doubles, three triples, and one home run. Comerota leads the team in RBIs (34), is second in walks (23) and stolen bases (11), and he is tied for third in runs scored (27). With only 21 strikeouts in 207 at bats, Comerota has been one of the toughest batters to strikeout this season in the entire Northwest League.

Voting for the Northwest League All-Star Team is done by the eight team managers. Comerota finished tied in the voting for third base with Eugene's Travis Whitmore, with both players making the team. For the Bears this season Comerota has played 49 games at first base, five games in left field, and made one appearance as a pitcher, but has not played at all at third base. In 519 total chances at the positions in the field he did play, Comerota committed just five errors, leaving him with a .990 fielding percentage.

Comerota is a native of Houston, Texas who was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 18th Round of the 2010 Draft out of Rice University.

Comerota and the rest of the Bears are still in the playoff hunt, sitting just one game behind the Tri-City Dust Devils in the East Division standings with five games left in the regular season. All five of the Bears final regular season games are against the Eugene Emeralds and will be played at Yakima County Stadium. Tickets are still available for all remaining games at the Bears downtown Yakima office.
