Binghamton Devils News Release
SYRACUSE, NY - Steven Santini scored the only goal for the Binghamton Devils as the Syracuse Crunch put in three goals in the first period in a 5-1 win on Wednesday night in front of 4,444 at the War Memorial.
Syracuse took the lead in the first period on the first power-play chance of the game for either side. Carter Verhaeghe ripped home his 14th of the year from the left wing circle over the left shoulder of goaltender Eddie Lack. The goal came 6:47 into the game with assists from Erik Cernal and Olivier Archambault for the 1-0 lead.
Archambault tallied a goal of his own a few minutes later on a two-on-one rush with Kevin Lynch. From the left wing circle, Lynch fed Archambault and he roofed his 11th goal of the year and second point of the night over the left shoulder of Lack for the two-goal lead. Assists on Archambault's goal were credited to Lynch and Mathieu Joseph for a 2-0 advantage.
Verhaeghe scored another power-play goal as time expired to take a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Lack had the original save, but, Verhaeghe sent the rebound over his left leg pad with exactly 0.05 seconds left on the clock. Syracuse took the three-goal lead into the first intermission break despite being outshot by the Devils, 12-9.
Steven Santini got the Devils on the board with his second of the season since being reassigned to Binghamton from New Jersey. Brett Seney had the puck in the right wing circle and lost it, but, Santini stepped up and ripped a snap shot over the shoulder of goaltender Connor Ingram to decrease the deficit to two goals. Assists were given to Seney and John Quenneville and Syracuse took the 3-1 lead into the final period with Binghamton holding the shot advantage, 21-20.
Syracuse added to its lead in the third period for the four-goal win. Alexander Volkov put in his 19th of the year at 8:09 and and Lynch recorded his 13th of the year and second point of the night 10:59 for the 5-1 victory over the Devils. Lack stopped 30 of 35 in the loss and Ingram denied 34 of 35 for the win.
