Syracuse Crunch News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Carter Verhaeghe scored twice during the three-goal first period to help build towards a 5-1 defeat of the Binghamton Devils tonight at the War Memorial Arena.
Mathieu Joseph paced the team with three points (1g, 2a), while Olivier Archambault and Kevin Lynch recorded a goal and assist each. Eight different Crunch players tallied at least one point as the Crunch advance to 42-19-3-4 on the season and extend their winning streak to six games. Syracuse has a 7-1-0-0 lead in the 10-game series against Binghamton.
Goaltender Connor Ingram stopped 34-of-35 shots to earn his seventh consecutive win between the pipes for the Crunch. Eddie Lack turned aside 30-of-35 for the Devils. Syracuse went 2-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
The Crunch opened scoring with a power-play goal 6:47 into the first period. Erik Cernak fed Verhaeghe at the top of the left circle. His shot beat Lack while the netminder was screened down low by Archambault.
Syracuse doubled their lead halfway through the first stanza. Lynch and Archambault skated into the zone on a 2-on-1 rush. After he hit the left face off dot, Lynch backhanded a feed for Archambault to pick the near corner. Joseph earned the secondary helper.
Verhaeghe recorded his second of the night with just one second remaining in the first period. While on the man-advantage, Joseph carried the puck across the blue line and tipped it back for Gabriel Dumont to shoot from the point. Lack made the pad save, but Verhaeghe recovered the rebound and backhanded the second chance into an open net from a sharp angle.
Binghamton stole one back with the only goal of second period. At the 5:30 mark, Ingram poked the puck away from Brett Seney, but couldn't recover his positioning and Steven Santini beat him glove side from the slot.
The Crunch tallied two more in the third period to hit five goals for the 15th time this season. Eight minutes in, Alexander Volkov bested Lack with a rocket from the right wing after streaking down the ice on a 2-on-1 with Joseph. Three minutes later, Kevin Lynch backhanded the puck in off a face-off win by Alexey Lipanov.
Syracuse host the Belleville Senators this Friday at 7 p.m.
