Firkus Pushing his Game to Another Level this Season

Moose Jaw Warriors News Release

Jagger Firkus returned to Moose Jaw and looked better than ever as he opened his fourth season with the Warriors last week.

Firkus was named WHL Player of the Week after posting three goals and seven points in his first three games of the season after returning from Seattle Kraken training camp.

"You want to stay at the NHL level, you want to keep that pace that you're there at camp with," Firkus said about returning to the WHL.

"I want to push the pace this season and I did that to start the season."

The 19-year-old forward put together a strong showing at his second NHL training camp. He said he was much more comfortable going into his second camp with Seattle.

"The second year, the staff wants to see you push the pace and wants to see you make plays at that pace, and I think that's what I did this year," Firkus said.

"I was super happy with my camp, staff was happy with my camp as well, so there's not much more I can do."

Firkus suited up in one preseason game with the Kraken, taking on the Calgary Flames at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle.

"It was super fun, playing in the NHL atmosphere, even if it's a preseason game, it's so cool, especially in Seattle, they have great fans there," Firkus said.

"One big thing I took away from this year is just even at that level, obviously it's a lot faster, but you just have to be ready, it's the same hockey game, so just prepare the same as you would for any other game."

Coming back to Moose Jaw, Firkus said he will be focusing on being the most consistent player possible.

"To play in the NHL and stay in the NHL, you have to be a consistent player and that's what I have to work on," he said. "It's hard to stay consistent every night, especially with the schedule we have in the Western Hockey League."

Firkus has led the Warriors in scoring each of the last two seasons, topping his career-high in goals with 40 and points with 88.

Heading into this season, Firkus said his goals are focused on helping the team off the ice.

"My voice is big in the room and it means a little bit, so that's one thing of whether we're down or whether we're off, I just got to make sure I'm staying even keel and making sure the team is staying calm," he said.

Firkus' focus on leadership has been rewarded with a letter for the first time in his WHL career, as he will serve as one of the team's assistant captains.

"It's super cool, I've always been a guy that talks in the room and likes to be vocal, but this year's it's a bit more purposeful and meaningful when I talk and I like that," he said.

Firkus' strong start helped the Warriors get back on track with three wins last week. He hopes that continues going into another busy week.

The Warriors travel to Alberta for games against Lethbridge and Medicine Hat this weekend.
