Pucks and Paws, Willie Wednesday, and Broncos Rematch Highlight Wheat Kings Week at Home
October 2, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
October will see the Brandon Wheat Kings away from almost half the month. For fans, this week's pair of games is your last chance to see them before they hit the road for three weeks.
For the first time this season, the Wheat Kings will be spending an entire week at home, hosting two games and not traveling to face any opponents. They and their fans should enjoy it while it lasts, because after this week, it will be some time before the Wheat Kings are back at Westoba Place.
"These are important games," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "All points count whether it's October or March. For us to go on a positive note into the U.S. trip would be good for us."
This week's home games begin on October 4 with another Willie Wednesday for a rematch with the Swift Current Broncos. Kids tickets are just $10, while hotdogs are $2 apiece. This will be the last Willie Wednesday for the month of October, so fans will want to grab their tickets HERE to get in on the last Willie Wednesday until November 1.
The Broncos are an exciting opponent to see in person as well. Not only is there a bevy of Manitoba talent on display (a combined 17 Manitoba-born players on the two rosters) but the Broncos and Wheat Kings are fresh off a hard-nosed game with plenty of bad blood on Saturday, September 30.
"It was a pretty intense game," Murray said. "It had a little bit of everything. I thought it was pretty quick, Swift was really quick in the first 12 or 13 minutes of the game. Then we adjusted our level of play, which was good to see. I thought overall it was a pretty intense game. When you play back to back, usually there's some bad blood but we're more focused on the two points."
Just three nights later, on Saturday, October 7, the Wheat Kings are proud to be hosting one of the most unique and exciting games of the year. For the first time ever, we're letting your four-footed friends into the building for our Pucks and Paws night. Dogs will be welcome at the arena, so come share the experience of a hockey game with your furry family member! You can grab tickets for that game HERE.
On the ice, it will be the first meeting of the season between the Wheat Kings and Calgary Hitmen, one of just two chances to see the Hitmen play at Westoba Place all season long. It will also be your last chance to see the Wheat Kings live before they embark on a journey through the U.S. Division that will keep them away from home ice until October 26.
