ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies erased a 7-2 deficit and defeated the BlueClaws 9-7 on Saturday at Spirit Communications Park. Gio Alfonzo and Quinn Brodey knocked in six runs in the eighth to mount the comeback. Alfonzo tied the game, 7-7, with a grand slam and Brodey followed up with a two-run blast. This ties a franchise record for the largest come-from-behind victory - the team also rallied from five runs down to win on August 28, 2016.
GRAND SALAMI: Alfonzo's grand slam on Saturday was the first by a Firefly at Spirit Communications Park in team history. It's also the 25-year-old's second at the pro level. He's the sixth player from Columbia to smash a grand slam. The five others all came on the road.
- Desmond Lindsey @ CHS (7/10/17)
- Reed Gamache @ ROM (4/18/17)
- Vincente Lupo @ ASH (8/16/16)
- Patrick Mazeika @ HIC (6/29/16)
- Jeff Diehl @ GVL (5/7/16)
WE GOT DRAMA: Columbia has won four straight, matching its longest winning streak of the season (May 2-5 & April 14-18). In the recent streak, the club has trailed after seven frames in two of these games. The Fireflies also walked off in consecutive games during this stretch - first time that's been done in franchise history.
THE STREAK: Jeremy Vasquez collected three hits on Saturday and has now reached base safely in 28 straight games - the third-longest streak in all of professional baseball (MLB & MiLB).
1. 30, Odubel Herrera (Philadelphia Phillies)
2. 29, Tyler White (Fresno Grizzlies, HOU, AAA)
3. 28, Jeremy Vasquez (NYM, A)
4. 27, Drew Ferguson (Fresno Grizzlies, HOU, AAA)
T-4. 27, Kevin Smith (Lansing Lugnuts, TOR, A)
The 21-year-old's streak is also a Fireflies franchise record. Vasquez leads the league in on-base percentage (.458) and walks (22) and is third in the SAL in batting average (.340).
HOLD YOUR BREATH: The Fireflies have played in games decided by two runs or fewer in 10 of the previous 12 contests.
