Flint Firebirds News Release
Flint, Mich. - The Flint Firebirds will take part in the 2015 Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Import Draft on Tuesday, Jun. 30 at 11 a.m. (ET).
The Ontario Hockey League (OHL), known as the premiere development league for the NHL, is one of three player development ice hockey leagues based in Canada and the United States that constitute the Canadian Hockey League (CHL).
The two-round draft takes place online with the order of selection rotating through each of the CHL's three leagues using an inverse order of final regular season standings within each league from the previous season.
This year, the Firebirds select 9th and 69th overall and fans can follow along live online at www.FlintFirebirds.com or via the club's official Facebook and Twitter accounts (@FlintFirebirds).
Each year, every team in the CHL has the option to choose up to two players from outside North America to add to its roster, however goaltenders are not eligible for selection. CHL teams are only allowed to keep two import players on the roster. If the club expects to keep these two players for the upcoming season, they can pass.
The 23rd annual CHL Import Draft took place at the end of last June and included a total of 71 players selected from 12 different countries led by 25 players from Russia and consisting of 50 forwards and 21 defensemen. The Import Draft is seen as a way to raise the level of competition in the CHL, as well as to broaden its fan base while retaining high North American content.
Firebirds season tickets for the 2015-16 inaugural season are currently on sale and can be purchased at the Perani Arena & Event Center Box Office, Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (ET).
