Most recently, Vili Saarijärvi was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings this past June in the 2015 NHL Draft.

OHL & CHL Recognition

Goaltender Zack Bowman was named both the first Pioneer Energy OHL Player of the Week and Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week for the 2015-16 regular season for the week ending Sept. 27 after posting a 2-0-0-0 record including one shutout with a goals-against-average of 0.96 and a save percentage of .966.

O Captain! My Captain!

Alex Peters (Dallas '14) has been selected as the first captain in Flint Firebirds franchise history. Cullen Mercer, Zack Pittman and Connor Sills make up the three alternate captains for the Flint Firebirds as the club embarks on their inaugural campaign in the Ontario Hockey League.

Special Teams on Fire

The Firebirds are operating at an impressive 33% on the man-advantage in the early stages of the season. In the Firebirds 3-0 victory in game one, Flint was 1-for-3 on the power-play while also tallying a short-handed and an even strength goal. Flint scored both of their goals with the man-advantage on Saturday night posting a 2-for-6 success rate in the home opener. Flint has not given up a goal while down a man yet, operating at 100% on the penalty kill.

Successful Opening Night

Saturday, Sept. 26 was one for the history books for Flint & Genesee County and hockey fans alike. The capacity crowd of more than 4,000 Flint Firbirds fans were sent home happy after having the opportunity to watch almost everything that a hockey game has to offer: A lead, a deficit, a quality hockey fight, a comeback, a 3-on-3 overtime, a shootout, a home team victory and a postgame stick salute from the players. It was a night that many will never forget.
