Finale, Series Goes to Squirrels with 7-3 Loss

CURVE, Pa. - Altoona was able to chase Squirrels top prospect Kyle Crick after 3.1 innings but in the end wound up falling to the Flying Squirrels, 7-3, on Saturday afternoon at Peoples Natural Gas Field. The Curve received a total of 11 walks from Richmond pitching on Saturday afternoon but only turned one of the 11 walks into a run.
Richmond scored first in the first inning thanks to a pair of Curve errors. All told it was the fourth total run of the series for Richmond and all four, including the first today, were unearned to Curve pitching.
Altoona was quick to answer in the bottom half of the first when Crick gifted the Curve a pair of walks. With Drew Maggi on third after a fielder's choice and a wild pitch, Mel Rojas, Jr. grounded out to deep second to score Maggi and the game was tied at one.
The Squirrels scored their first earned run of the series in the second on an RBI single from Tyler Graham with two outs and never trailed again on Saturday afternoon. After adding another in the third off Joely Rodriguez (0-2), Willy Garcia singled in Rojas to cut the deficit to one.
That's as close as it came for the Curve as the Squirrels scored four more times in the fifth off Rodriguez and reliever Matt Benedict. Rodriguez finished the game having allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings with three walks and one strikeout.
The Curve added a run without a hit late in the game thanks to three walks and an error. Quinton Miller made his first appearance of the season and worked 1.1 scoreless innings while whiffing three before A.J. Morris pitched the final two innings without allowing a run.
Now with an off day for Easter, the Curve (5-9) will get set to welcome in the Harrisburg Senators (AA - Nationals) at 6:30 p.m. on Monday here at Peoples Natural Gas Field. It'll be a Mirror Monday at the ballpark with $3 Grandstand tickets available with the coupon from the front page of the sport section in the Altoona Mirror.
On the bump for the Curve on Monday will be LHP Zack Dodson (0-1, 2.53), who left in line for a win in Harrisburg on Monday before the Senators stormed back to win it late. Harrisburg will counter with RHP Blake Schwartz (0-2, 7.62) in the lid lifter.
