Akron RubberDucks News Release
(Bowie, MD) April 19, 2014 - Giovanny Urshela and Alex Lavisky hit solo home runs on Saturday afternoon, leading the Akron RubberDucks to a 3-1 victory and a three-game series sweep over the Bowie Baysox.
The RubberDucks (9-7) have won three in a row for the first time this season, and are two games over the .500-mark for the first time as well. The three wins over the Baysox (8-8) were all closely contested, with two one-run games and Saturday's two-run margin.
Righthander Gabriel Arias(2-1) worked six innings to pick up his second win of the season. He scattered five hits, and allowed just one run on a solo homer by Christian Walker. Arias did not walk a batter, and fanned three. Relief help came from righty Duke von Schamann, who tossed the final three innings for his first save. Von Schamann also did not walk anyone and recorded four strikeouts.
The Akron bullpen worked eight innings of shutout baseball in the series.
Urshela led off the Akron second inning with a long homer to left, his third of the season. It came off Bowie starter Matt Bischoff. Urshela now leads the team with 12 RBI. After Walker tied it, 1-1, with his homer in the fourth, the RubberDucks rallied to take the lead for good in the sixth against leftahnder Jason Gurka (0-1). Lavisky led off the inning with his second homer of the year to give the Ducks a 2-1, lead. After Tyler Naquin was hit by a pitch and Francisco Lindor was walked, Joe Wendle lined a single to left to score Naquin and make it 3-1.
The RubberDucks will be off on Sunday, and then continue the road trip on Monday night at 7:05, at Trenton. RHP Cody Anderson (1-1, 3.60) will start for Akron, while LHP Jeremy Bleich (1-2, 7.62) is the expected starter for Trenton.
