Sussex County Miners News Release

Augusta, NJ - The Can-Am League announced today that Sussex County Miners third baseman Martin Figueroa is the 2018 Can-Am Rookie of the Year. This marks the second time in the Miners four year existence that a Miner has won the award for top rookie batter in the league.

Figueroa had earned the Can-Am's Player of the Month award in June, when he hit .422 with 22 RBIs. That hot month has led to Martin holding a .328 batting average on the season. Figueroa has five home runs and is tied with fellow teammate Jayce Ray for the lead in triples with six. Martin has also knocked in 47 RBIs overall and has 19 stolen bases.

"It means a lot," Figueroa would say about winning the award. "It is a blessing to come into this league and perform the way I did and receive that award. It's a really good award, and I'm just blessed."

The honor was not lost on Miners manager Bobby Jones. "He's been great," Jones would say. "He's been a great teammate, he's been a great player all year. You really can't say anything negative about him. He's been outstanding all season for us."

Figueroa becomes the second Miner to win the award after Johnny Bladel took home the honor in the Miners first season in 2015, a fact that was not lost on the Miners skipper. "It's a great honor," Jones would add. "For Figgy (Figueroa) to do it this year in a situation where we didn't know what we were going to get when we signed him is just really a huge blessing. He's really been great all year."

And Figueroa certainly acknowledged the experience has been a good one. "It's (the experience) has been good," Martin would say about the team and his teammates. "We have a bunch of veterans in this locker room that I have learned from, that have guided me and taught me how to do things the right way."

Figueroa and the Miners continue their push to the Can-Am League playoffs that begin on Wednesday, September 5th.
