Fightins Shutout on Christmas in July

The Reading Fightin Phils (43-60) lost 5-0 on Christmas in July at FirstEnergy Stadium to the Akron RubberDucks (58-49). Akron's Duke von Schamann tossed seven shutout innings as the Fightin Phils only managed three hits.

Akron scored in the top of the 1st inning off Adam Loewen to take a 1-0 lead as Bryan LaHair hit a RBI double to score Erik Gonzalez. LaHair struck again in the top of the 3rd inning as he hit a RBI single to score Jordan Smith to give the RubberDucks a 2-0 lead. Peter Lavin and Edgar Duran committed back-to-back errors in the inning.

The Rubberducks got to Loewen in the top of the 6th inning as Tony Wolters hit a RBI single and Jake Lowery added a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 4-0. Adam Loewen (1-4) pitched six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) off six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Mike Nesseth tossed two scoreless innings in which he recorded three strikeouts.

Austin Wright made his first appearance off the 7-Day disabled list as he allowed one run off two hits and one walk with one strikeout in the top of the 9th inning.

The Fightin Phils and Akron RubberDucks play tomorrow night at FirstEnergy Stadium beginning at 6:35 pm. Hoby Milner (5-5, 4.79 ERA) makes the start for the Fightin Phils.
