Fightins knock out Curve in extras

The Fightin Phils (74-55) stopped a complete comeback by the Altoona Curve (69-61) on Wednesday night as they won 8-6 in extra innings. After Altoona tied the game in the ninth, Reading took the lead in the 10th.

For the second time in three games the Fightin Phils scored in the top of the first inning against the Curve. Reading took a 2-0 lead off Zack Dodson as Brock Stassi hit a sacrifice fly and Destin Hood hit a RBI triple. Altoona got a run back in the bottom of the first inning as Barrett Barnes hit a RBI single that scored Jose Osuna and cut Reading's lead to 2-1.

Dodson left the game after five innings. Clario Perez entered the game for Altoona in the top of the sixth inning. Perez ran into trouble in the top of the seventh inning. After striking out Thompson he gave up a walk to Art Charles then a single to KC Serna. Perez struck out Andrew Knapp then walked Stassi. Destin Hood hit a grand slam that gave Reading a 6-1 lead. It was the first grand slam for Reading since May 4th at New Hampshire when Aaron Altherr hit one.

Thompson left the game after six innings and allowed one run. Tom Windle entered the game and began pitching in the bottom of the seventh inning. He left the game with one out in the bottom of the eighth as he walked the bases loaded with one out. Jimmy Cordero came into the game to replace Windle. Barrett Barnes hit a RBI single that scored Adam Frazier to bring the Curve within four runs, 6-2. The run was charged to Windle. Cordero struck out the next two batters to finish out the inning.

Stephen Shackleford pitched the bottom of the ninth inning. Altoona scored four runs in the inning to tie the game at 6-6 and send it to extra innings. Shackleford left with two outs in the inning as Edubray Ramos finished out the inning. Angelo Mora and Serna walked with the bases loaded in the top of the 10th inning that gave Reading an 8-6 lead.

Ramos (1-1) would earn his first Double-A win as Roibal would earn his first Double-A save. Jhondaniel Medina (3-6) took the loss for Altoona. Destin Hood, Harold Martinez and Andrew Knapp extended their hitting streaks to four games. KC Serna finished the night with four hits.

The Fightin Phils return to Baseballtown for their final home stand of the regular season on Thursday night as they welcome in the Bowie Baysox for four games. First pitch is at 7:05 pm.
