Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
FARGO, N.D. - Capitalizing on a third-period scoring opportunity with the game tied, the Dubuque Fighting Saints defeated the Fargo Force 2-1 on Saturday night, completing a weekend sweep of the Western Conference opponent.
Mitchell Smith's tally halfway through the third period proved to be the deciding marker in the tight, defensive struggle between these two teams. At four-on-four strength, Smith deflected a shot from the top of the right circle taken by his brother Evan, and pushed it past Ryan Wischow, who got his second start in as many nights.
It would be Fargo who started the scoring, when Brody Stevens bashed home his third goal of the season off of a rebound at even strength, early in the second period. That would be the only goal Fargo could push through Hunter Miska, who stifled the Force all night.
He denied 21 shots on Saturday night, and a total of 61 throughout the weekend. With the wins, and a total of six on the season, he has secured the USHL lead in goaltender wins.
Dallas Gerads tied the game for the Saints after the Force took the lead in the second period. He cashed in on a rebound at the side of the net when Jakob Romo deflected a point shot from Andrew Kerr to Gerads, who was wide open for the tap-in goal. Romo picked up his first point of the season on the play.
On this night, it was not special teams that did the heavy lifting. The Fighting Saints smothered Fargo's power play to the tune of an 0-for-9 weekend. Dubuque was unable to cash on their three power play opportunities on this night.
Dating back to last weekend, the Dubuque Fighting Saints have won four games in a row, and now stand atop the Eastern Conference with seven wins and 14 standings points. All but one of their wins this season has come by a margin of one goal.
Up next for the Dubuque Fighting Saints is a match-up with the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday night at 7:05 p.m., and the Bloomington Thunder on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Join all of the live action on the radio home of the Fighting Saints, Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the official video provider of the USHL, FASTHockey.com.
