MADISON, WISCONSIN - Madison Capitols forward Sam McCormick broke a 2-2 tie with 1:22 remaining, sending the home team to a 3-2 victory Sunday over the Chicago Steel at Alliant Energy Center. Following the win, the Capitols move to 6-3-0-0 (12 points) on the season, while Chicago (3-7-0-0, 6 points) dropped their third consecutive decision.

The Steel scored the opening goal for a sixth straight game, as Alex Frye fed a pass to Marcel Godbout at the back door, burying a one-time shot on the ice past Madison's Garrett Metcalf at 2:34. The lead was immediately erased by Capitols left wing Alexander Payusov, who roofed a short-side shot past Steel netminder Daniel Vladar just 51 seconds after Godbout's tally. Then at 6:54, Tyson McClellan scored on a wrist shot from inside the left circle to give Madison a 2-1 lead. Godbout later engaged in his first fight of the season, exchanging shots near center ice with Capitols center Garrett Klee.

Chicago limited the Capitols to just three shots on goal during a scoreless second period. Wisconsin natives Jake Nielsen of the Steel and Cole Hults of the Capitols tangled in the game's second fight much to the approval of the 2,113 fans in attendance.

Lucas Michaud tied the game for the Steel in 3rd period, jamming the puck in from the top of Metcalf's crease at 5:33. However, with just 82 seconds remaining in the game, Ryan Lohin of the Capitols found an open McCormick at the left post, who sent a one-timer past Vladar to regain the lead for Madison, 3-2. Vladar headed to the bench with 1:10 remaining, giving the Steel a 6-on-5 attack for the rest of the game. The Steel furiously tried to tie the game once more, including Mitch Lewandowski's left post wraparound attempt, but Metcalf shut the door and the Capitols held on for a 3-2 win.

Chicago outshot Madison 29-16 in the game, limiting the Capitols to a single-digit shot tally in each period. Metcalf had 27 saves for Madison, while Vladar stopped 13 of 16 for Chicago.

The Capitols have won six of their last seven games.

The Steel finish their six-game road swing with games this week in Michigan against the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Team USA. Wednesday's game is a 10:30 a.m. EDT faceoff in Muskegon, while the Steel and Team USA will meet Friday in Plymouth at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

The Steel return home on Friday, November 6 for Military Appreciation Night against the Muskegon Lumberjacks, starting the month that features seven home games.
