Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA-The Sioux Falls Stampede jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead and never looked back, downing the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 4-2 Saturday night at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. Daniel Warpecha, Collin Peters, Jack Suter and Parker Tuomie all scored in the victory for the Herd while Ales Stezka stopped 32 of 34 shots to earn the win in goal. The win was the first of the season on the road for the Herd who improved to 5-4-0 on the season and have won four of their last five games since starting the year 1-3-0.
The Stampede came out flying in the first period and caught the RoughRiders sleeping through most of the period, outshooting the Riders 17-4. Sioux Falls drew three power play opportunities through the first 13 minutes, but were unable to beat Cedar Rapids (5-2-1) netminder Benjamin Blacker. With just under four minutes remaining in the period the Herd found the back of the net when Matt Riggleman weaved his way through the Riders defense along the right wing boards and sent a perfect pass in the slot to Daniel Warpecha who fired a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net to make it a 1-0 lead. Late in the period the Stampede went back on the power play and this time they would make Cedar Rapids pay as Jack Becker took a pass from Garrett Cecere in the slot, spun around and sent a pass onto the tape of Collin Peters who was stationed in front of the net and quickly one-timed it home to give Sioux Falls a 2-0 lead. The Herd outshot the Riders 17-4 in the period.
Cedar Rapids got on the board with a power play goal at 2:47 when Justin Cole sent a pass up the right wing boards to Ross Colton who skated to the edge of the right circle and blasted a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net, past the glove side of Stampede goaltender Ales Stezka. It remained 2-1 until 11:10 of the second when Sioux Falls regained the two goal edge on a goal from Jack Suter. Collin Peters and Matt Riggleman help set up Jack Suter who stood in front of the Riders net and quickly backhanded a shot under the pads of Blacker to give the Stampede a 3-1 edge. The RoughRiders would apply plenty of pressure the rest of the period and outshot the Herd 15-4, but Stezka made several big saves and the Herd took their 3-1 lead into the locker room.
Cedar Rapids cut into the Stampede lead once again at 5:48 of the third period when they once again cashed in on a power play opportunity. Justin Cole took a pass from Matt Gosiewski and beat Stezka to bring the Riders back within a goal at 3-2. The rest of the period went back-and-forth with both teams exchanging some good scoring opportunities, but both goaltenders played well keeping the score at 3-2. Cedar Rapids pulled their goaltender in the final minute and had an offensive zone face-off with 26 seconds remaining, but the Herd chipped the puck off the boards into the Cedar Rapids zone where Parker Tuomie picked up the puck and scored into the empty net to give the Herd a 4-2 victory. Tuomie has now scored in five straight games for the Herd and leads the team in scoring with eight goals.
Cedar Rapids outshot the Herd 34-32 on the night and went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Herd were 1-for-7.
