Hartford Yard Goats News Release

Hartford, Conn - Yard Goats starters combined for 14 strikeouts in 11 of 14 innings during Thursday's doubleheader against the Fightin Phils, but Reading's staff gave up just a single run to come away with the sweep at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Still, the Yard Goats remain just 1.5 games back of the Eastern League lead, as the Somerset Patriots split their doubleheader with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies.

Nick Bush dazzled on the mound in game one to begin his 10th start of the season. The former eighth-round pick set down the first 11 hitters on just 43 pitches while striking out six. Following an infield hit to break up the perfect game in the fourth inning, Phillies' No. 5 prospect Logan O'Hoppe belted the very next pitch to left center to put Reading on top, 2-0.

Phillies' No. 20 prospect James McArthur matched zeroes with Bush through three innings, adding four strikeouts of his own. In the bottom of the fourth, Hunter Stovall led with a double off the wall in right to end the no-hit bid. With two outs, third baseman Aaron Schunk grounded a seeing-eye single up the middle to get Hartford within a run. Brenton Doyle followed with a single and stole second base on a ball in the dirt, but Schunk was gunned down trying to score the tying run on the throw to second.

The Yard Goats loaded the bases in the fifth, starting with Daniel Montaño's fourth hit in his first six Double-A at-bats. McArthur escaped the one-out jam unscathed to finish his outing. On the other side, Bush pitched all seven innings while striking out a season-high eight hitters. Fightin Phils' leftfielder Jack Conley scored on a bunt in the fifth inning and Ali Castillo singled home Reading's fourth and final run in the seventh.

In game two, Hartford starter Michael Baird struck out four in his first three innings. Then in the fourth, Phillies' No. 12 prospect Jhailyn Ortiz led off with his ninth home run of the year to left to put the Fightin Phils ahead, 1-0. Baird finished his outing with six strikeouts total, the most he's had in a start this season.

Hartford put five runners on in the first two innings but could not score against Phillies' No. 11 prospect Erik Miller. Reading's bullpen retired the next 12 hitters in order before Montaño drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh. MacIver followed with a single through the right side of the infield to put runners on first and second. Hunter Stovall drew a pinch-hit walk on four pitches to load the bases. With one out, Jimmy Herron ripped a liner to Conley in left. The converted catcher caught the ball flat-footed and fired a one-hop strike just ahead of Montaño's slide to end the game.

The Yard Goats (29-19) and Fightin Phils (21-27) play tomorrow, June 3 (7:05 ET) at Dunkin' Donuts Park. RHP Noah Davis starts for Hartford, and RHP Noah Skirrow will start for Reading. The game will be broadcast on Newsradio 1410 WPOP.
