Lake County Fielders News Release
Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (June 11, 2011) - For just the second time this season, the Lake County Fielders (11-4) failed to score first against the opposition, allowing the Edmonton Capitals (8-6) to come out on top, 8-4, on Saturday afternoon.
The Capitals took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd inning, when right fielder Tom Collaro hit a leadoff single and scored on first baseman Brent Metheny's two-run homer to left field. But, the lead did not last long against a resilient Fielders squad.
Fielders starting pitcher Michael Moore earned a one-out walk in the top of the 3rd inning. Quentin Luquette followed up with a double to the alley in right-center field, giving the Fielders runners at second base and third base for Rex Rundgren. Rundgren came up big, hitting a triple to right-center field to tie the game at 2-2. It was the closest the Fielders would be for the rest of the game.
Edmonton regained the lead in the bottom of the 4th inning with a run-scoring sacrifice fly by left fielder Alex Chavez. Centerfielder Todd Linden hit a two-run home run with two men out in the bottom of the 5th inning. And, the Capitals added another run in the bottom of the 6th on a wild pitch, to take a 6-2 lead.
Moore (1-1) didn't get much offensive support in the game, and suffered the loss. He lasted 5.1 innings, giving up six earned runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking a pair. His opposition, Edmonton starting pitcher Darryl Arreola (1-1), dominated the Fielders on Saturday. Arreola went seven innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, striking out eight and walking only one Fielder hitter.
C.J. Ziegler tried to make it competitive in the top of the 8th inning, hitting a two-run blast over the left field wall, his fifth home run of the season, cutting the deficit to 6-4. But, Edmonton got those two runs back in the bottom half of the 8th on pinch-hitter Cody Nowlin's two-run triple to right field, to make it 8-4.
The Fielders will look to even the series in game four of the five-game set against the Edmonton Capitals on Sunday afternoon. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00pm local (3:00pm central). The Fielders hold a two-and-a-half-game lead over Edmonton in the North Division standings. You can listen to the game on 1220 AM WKRS or online at fieldersbaseball.com or wkrs.com.
