Thunder Drop Double-Header to Roadrunners

EDINBURG, Texas---The Edinburg Roadrunners used two good starts from their starters to sweep the double-header from the McAllen Thunder with scores of 4-1 and 4-3 at Edinburg Baseball Stadium on Sunday night.

Aaron Guerra (2-0) picked up his second victory after pitching six innings and allowing just one run on four hits in game one and Jorge Quintero (1-3) picked up his first win after allowing three runs in five innings and striking out four.

In Game one, the Roadrunners (6-12) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first against McAllen starter Justin Jordan (1-4). Michael Lewis was hit by a pitch and then moved to third on a single by Brandon Wilkerson. Gabe Memmert followed with an RBI single to single to right field scoring Lewis from third. Osiel Flores drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly that allowed Wilkerson to score giving Edinburg the 2-0 lead.

Jamar Hill added to the Roadrunners lead with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the top of the second inning making it 3-0.

The Thunder (9-9) got on the board in the bottom of the third when Yordanys Perez hit an RBI single that scored Zach Mandelblatt from second base cutting the Roadrunners lead 3-1.

Edinburg added another run in the top of the fourth. Stantrel Smith led off the inning with a single and then stole second and third. Two outs later, Lewis followed with an RBI single that allowed Smith to score making it 4-1.

Julio Castro pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season giving the Roadrunners the 4-1 victory.

In game two, the Thunder (9-10) got on the board in the bottom of the first against Quintero. Yordanys Perez hit an RBI single allowing D.J. Dixon to score giving McAllen the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second, Wellington Dotel hit a single and then stole second base. Jamar Hill followed with an RBI double that scored Dotel from second tying the game at one.

Michael Lewis started the top of the third with a single and then moved to second on a stolen base. Memmert then hit an RBI single scoring Lewis from second which gave Edinburg the 2-1 edge.

McAllen answered back in the bottom of the third with a run. Wilson Batista started the inning with a single and then moved to second after a throwing error by Edinburg. Mike Goss then hit a two-out RBI single that allowed Batista to score tying the game at two.

Jamar Hill broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning with a solo homerun off of Shawn Wilyman giving Edinburg the 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Adam Matos hit an RBI single that allowed Zach Mandelblatt to score from second tying the game at three.

Edinburg (7-12) regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Hill, who went 3-for-3, hit a single to left field and then stole second. Robert Matlock then followed with an RBI single to left field that allowed Hill to score giving the Roadrunners the 4-3 lead.

Julio Castro pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season which gave Edinburg the sweep of the double-header.

The Roadrunners and Thunder will play the fourth game of their four-game series Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Scott Wingo (1-0) is expected to start for Edinburg with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
