Lake County Fielders News Release

The Lake County Fielders (7-11) won the first game of Wednesday night's doubleheader against the Joliet JackHammers (9-9) 4-1. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was cancelled due to inclement weather, leaving the two teams to play two seven inning games Wednesday night.

The Fielders scored first in the second inning. Shortstop Kyle Higgins ripped a double and was brought around by a single off Hank Lanto, his first hit and RBI as a Fielder. The Fielders defense then retired six consecutive JackHammers.

The Fielders scored a single run in the fourth after Andrew Riddick stole his first base as a Fielder and reached on a sac fly hit by Amos Ramon.

Josh Short laced his third home run on the year; a two run homer in the top of the fifth to give the Fielders a 4-0 lead. The JackHammers answered back with one unearned run in the bottom of the fifth.

Starting pitcher Corey Bass (2-2) took the win for the Fielders, pitching four and two-thirds innings, giving up four hits, one unearned run and striking out three. Chris Homer was tagged with his third save of the year pitching one scoreless inning.

The second game of the doubleheader unfortunately did not have the same fate as the first. The Fielders, now 7-12, lost 2-1 in Joliet after their second seven inning game Wednesday. Josh Short hit his second homer on the day, but that was the only run the Fielders would score.

Ryan Bicondoa was tagged with the loss in his first appearance with the Fielders. He had an overall good outing, pitching six complete innings and giving up only four hits and striking out four batters. JackHammers Todd Privett took the win for Joliet, holding the Fielders to two hits.

Drew Shrewtone relieved Privett and earned a save in his one inning outing, giving up two hits to Fielders Josh Short and Jeff Dunbar.

Josh Short got the Fielders on the board first with a solo, lead-off homerun; his second homerun of the series and fourth of the year. The JackHammers answered with two unearned runs in the sixth to secure the win over the Fielders.

The Fielders will wrap up the series in Joliet tomorrow looking to win their first series of the season. The Fielders will send RHP Zach Ward (1-0, 3.71) to the mound, facing RHP Rory Shortell. Game time begins 7:10PM. Catch the action streaming live through 1220 WKRS am.
