Lake County Fielders News Release

The Lake County Fielders lost the second game of their home series 6-0 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats after a 5-3 win yesterday. The Fielders had only three hits and gave up three critical errors Saturday night in front of a crowd of 1,275 at Carthage College.

Gary took advantage of two Lake County errors in the bottom of the third inning to grab a 1-0 lead. Catcher Yuki Matsumoto reached first on an overthrown ball by shortstop Kyle Higgins. Second baseman Joseph Ramos stumbled on a ball hit by Adam Klein overthrowing it into the Gary dugout scoring Matsumoto for the first run of the game Adam Klein was caught stealing and thrown out by Anthony Esquer for the second out and Massaro was retired to end the inning, but not without damage.

The RailCats had a four run fourth inning to increase their lead 5-0. Christin Guerroro led off the inning with a double advancing to third off a Jeff Beachum single. Townsend then popped out to first baseman Josh Petersen for the first out of the inning. Louis Ott ripped an RBI single to score Guerrero.

Starting pitcher Garry Bakker walked Carrerra, part of four walks he issued in his six innings of work. Klein came up and cleared the bases with a double to give the RailCats a good cushion into the bottom of the fourth.

The Railcats tacked on an insurance run in the eight after a leadoff double from Louis Ott who was driven in by Jay Pecci giving the RailCats 6-0 lead.

The Fielders only had seven baserunners in the game, five of which were in the last two innings. Gary starting pitcher Brandon Magee worked eight innings of shutout baseball striking out six.

The Fielders look to rebound in the rubber game of the series Sunday at Carthage College at 1:00pm. Corey Bass is slated to get the start for the Fielders with Tom Thorton getting the start for Gary.
