Calgary, AB. -- Brandon Wheat Kings 19-year old left-wingerMichael Ferlandwas among the seven players released by Team Canada at theNational Junior Selection Camp in Calgary Tuesday morning.
A 19-year old Brandon product, Ferland was one of five Western Hockey League players to be cut as the National Junior team trimmed its roster to thirty-five players.
Rounding out the list of cuts early Tuesday morning wereBrenden Kichton, Mathew Dumba, Max Reinhart, Mark McNiell, Zach Phillips andJerome Gauthier-Leduc.
The team is expected to announce its 22-man roster later this week and among the players still bidding for a spot on the roster is Brandon captainMark Stone, who currently leads the Western Hockey League in scoring with 27 goals and 65 points.
A fifth round draft choice of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames, Ferland is currently second in team scoring and 12th in the league with 17 goals and 44 points in thirty games.
Should Stone make the Canadian team, he could be one of two Wheat Kings participating in this year's event. Left-wingerAlessio Bertaggia will attend the Swiss U20 Camp in Red Deer this weekend.
Team Canada will open up this year's World Junior Hockey Championship on Boxing Day against Finland.
Ferland is expected to be back in Brandon in time for Tuesday night's game against the visiting Kelowna Rockets.
