Hudson Valley Renegades News Release

TROY, NY- The Hudson Valley Renegades overcame a one-run deficit by scoring two runs in the ninth inning, both on wild pitches, to defeat the Tri-City ValleyCats 4-3 Friday night from Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. The was the ninth consecutive for the Renegades who had only one RBI on the night.

The ValleyCats got on the board first in the first as third baseman Emmanuel Valdez doubled to right with one out. The next hitter, rightfielder Gilberto Celestino, grounded a single into center to score Valdez and put Tri-City up 1-0.

The Renegades came back to tie the game in the fourth thanks to a couple of ValleyCats errors. With one out and shortstop Tyler Frank at first for Hudson Valley, a wild pitch moved him to second. On the play, Tri-City catcher Oscar Campos threw wildly into centerfield, which allowed Frank to take third. ValleyCats centerfielder Ramiro Rodriguez tried to gun down Frank at third, however his throw was also errant and allowed Frank to score from third.

Hudson Valley took their first lead of the game in the sixth when catcher Chris Betts lifted his third homerun of the season to right field. It was a solo homerun and marked the sixth consecutive game in which a Renegade went yard.

The lead didn't last long though as Tri-City scored two unearned runs in their half of the sixth. A throwing error by Rondon to lead off the inning allowed shortstop Jeremy Pena to reach second base. The ValleyCats shortstop scored when Valdez followed with a groundball single to right. Two outs later, with Valdez at second, designated hitter Austin Dennis blooped a single to left to bring in the go-ahead run and give Tri-City a 3-2 lead.

Things stayed that way until the ninth inning. Hudson Valley loaded the bases on a single, walk, and throwing error on a sacrifice bunt. With one away, Tri-City closer Ian Hardman uncorked a wild pitch, which tied the game. After another walk reloaded the bases, reliever Luis De Paula came in for Hardman and promptly delivered another wild pitch to put the Renegades ahead 4-3.

In the bottom-of-the-ninth, Renegades relief man Trey Cumbie tossed a 1-2-3 inning, while striking out two, to nail down the win.

Hudson Valley registered 10 hits for the contest, including two apiece from Betts, shortstop Ford Proctor, and centerfielder Michael Smith. Betts' homer represented the only RBI and extra base-hit for the Renegades on the evening.

Tri-City finished with seven hits, including a 2-4 performance from Valdez who doubled, drove in a run, and scored two more. First-baseman Juan Pineda chipped in with two singles as well.

Getting the win for the Renegades was Cumbie (2-0) who fired two perfect innings and struck out four of the six men he faced. The loss fell to Hardman (0-1) who was charged with the two go-ahead runs on a hit and two walks in his lone inning of work. Right-hander Michael Mercado started the game for Hudson Valley and allowed one run on four hits in five frames.

The Renegades finish their three-game series with the Tri-City ValleyCats tomorrow with first-pitch slated for 7:00. Right-hander Nick Padilla (1-1, 4.05 ERA) will toe the rubber for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Felipe Tejada (1-1, 4.70 ERA) of the ValleyCats.

Hudson Valley returns home on July 5th when they open a brief two-game series and homestand against the Staten Island Yankees. Both games start at 7:05 and will include a postgame fireworks show. Tickets can be purchased online at hvrenegades.com or by calling the ticket office at 845-838-0094.
