Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
NORWICH, Ct. - The Connecticut Tigers (4-10) grabbed a 5-0 lead in the sixth inning and held off a late charge by the Staten Island Yankees (4-10) as 2018 Detroit Tigers draftee Yaya Chentouf picked up his first professional save in a 5-4 Tigers win on Friday night at Dodd Stadium.
Chentouf entered a 5-3 game in the top of the ninth and allowed a one-out triple by Jesus Bastidas, who scored one batter later when Ryan Lidge lifted a sacrifice fly to left. Staten Island brought the go-ahead run to the plate but Chentouf, a 36th-round pick from Pitt, struck out Eduardo Torrealba to end the ballgame and picked up the save in his second appearance as a pro.
Jose King recorded his best plate performance as a Connecticut Tiger with three runs batted in. The Detroit Tigers traded for the 19-year-old shortstop in a 2017 deal that sent Ian Kinsler to the Los Angeles Angels. King drove in the decisive runs on Friday with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth that scored Darwin Alvarado and Dayton Dugas.
Tigers starter Gio Arriera (Win, 1-1) carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning during his longest career outing. The 2017 fourth-round pick from Palm Beach State Junior College, allowed three hits and loaded the bases in the fifth. He exited with two outs before Daniel Gonzalez escaped the jam to protect Arriera's 5 2/3 scoreless innings.
With a 5-0 lead in the seventh, Gonzalez gave up two extra-base hits and three runs. Torrealba sent an RBI double to the wall in left and finished 2-for-5 at the plate for Staten Island.
Ryan Karstetter opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI double to left field that scored Sam McMillan and Cam Warner. Yankees starter Matt Sauer (Loss, 0-1) entered the game with a 0.90 ERA and struck out four Tigers through the first two frames but leveled off in the third when King scored Karstetter on an infield single deflected by Sauer.
On Saturday, the Tigers will swing for their first sweep of the 2018 season as right-handed starter Carlos Guzman (0-1, 7.50) goes to the mound at 6:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans on Saturday will receive a CT Tigers Square Grip Phone Holder. Dodd Stadium gates will open at 5 p.m.
