Fateful Fifth Inning Dooms Dogs in Inaugural Game

Sioux Falls, S.D. - Missed opportunities at the plate and a fateful fifth inning in the field sunk the Chicago Dogs in the first game in franchise history as the team fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries by a score of 9-5 on an historic Friday night from Sioux Falls Stadium.

Trailing by a score of 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth inning, the Canaries sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven times against three separate Chicago pitchers and ultimately staking themselves to a lead they would never relinquish.

The Dogs wasted little time scoring the first run in franchise history on the strength of a Craig Maddox RBI single in the top of the first inning. The lead would not last long however, as Ty Morrison responded for Sioux Falls with an opposite field solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first and tie the game at one.

Chicago would take the lead right back with single runs in the second and fifth innings, but their failure to capitalize on scoring chances ultimately came back to bite them. The Dogs finished the night 2-17 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men on base.

Making his first professional start, Dogs right-hander Josh Goossen-Brown cruised through his first four innings, allowing just one run on two hits. Things started to unravel for Goossen-Brown in the fifth however, as the Canaries put the first two men on base. Goossen-Brown then gave way to right-hander Tyson Perez who promptly allowed a three-run opposite field home run off the bat of Burt Reynolds. Perez, who took the loss for the Dogs, ultimately allowed five runs on three hits, while recording just one out.

Jabari Henry picked up where he left off for the Canaries after his record setting 2017 campaign. Henry, who hit a league-leading 29 home runs for Sioux Falls in 2017, went 3-4 with a home run and a pair of runs scored Friday. Sioux Falls starter, Grady Wood pitched five innings of three run ball to pick up the win for the Canaries.

Kyle Gaedele hit the first home run in Dogs history with a ninth inning solo shot. Edwin Arroyo scored the first run in Dogs history. Goossen-Brown, whose final line registered three runs on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk, recorded the first strikeout in team history.

The Dogs and Canaries will play the second game of a three game set Saturday night in Sioux Falls. Dogs lefty, Kylin Turnbull will start against Canaries lefty, Joe Bircher. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. The game will be broadcast on www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts with a pregame show beginning at 5:45 p.m.
