Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. -- The Brandon Wheat Kings will be hoping that a large crowd on Saturday night will help them as they look to snap a 2-game Western Hockey League losing streak against the visiting Medicine Hat Tigers at Westman Communications Group Place.
In addition to providing fans with their first look at the Tigers this season, Saturday night is Home Depot Family Skate Night, presented by 94.7 Star FM and 880 CKLQ.
All fans attending are encouraged to bring their skates, helmets and cameras to the rink and join their favorite players on the ice following the game for a "free" Public Skate.
The Family Skate will be hosted by CKLQ's Candace Bowles, who also serves as the Wheat Kings regular in-game hostess during the season.
In addition to the Skate, Home Depot will be giving away a number of prizes and the Wheat Kings will team up with PhysioFirst for another Chuck-a-Puck. This Saturday's Chuck-a-Puck will be held in support of the Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex.
The Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex is a project that was launched by the Westman Softball Association with the support of the Brandon Slo-Pitch League, the Orthodox Leagues and the Westman Old-Timers. It is intended to address the growing need for softball diamonds in Brandon due to facilities that have been recently lost around the city.
"Softball has lost diamonds over the past few years to construction, other sports, flooding," says Ashley Neufeld Complex Inc. president Brett Turner. "At the same time, we are seeing an increase in demand for diamonds because of an increase in teams."
The planned $1.5 million facility will include four full-sized diamonds, four mini-diamonds for youth aged 4 - 10 and a building that will house the canteen, washrooms and changing rooms. A new facility will address a growing need for ball diamonds in Brandon, revitalize the south side of the river and replace facilities that been lost in recent years.
The City of Brandon has already provided a parcel of land in the 1000 block of Parker Boulevard. The Association's Sod for Softball campaign is the first step in the fundraising effort to begin construction of the facility.
The complex is named in honour of Ashley Neufeld, one of Brandon's most gifted young athletes, who died in a tragic vehicle accident in North Dakota in 2009.
As well, Saturday is another Brandon Source for Sports - Subway Family Night. The $48 Wheat Kings Family Pack, available at Source for Sports includes 2 adult and 2 youth tickets, 4 6" subs and four souvenir programs.
All other tickets for Saturday's game are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com
Following Saturday's game the Wheat Kings will travel to Regina to meet the Pats on Sunday, before returning home to host the Calgary Hitmen on "2 For Tuesday" night at Westman Place.
