Family Fun Day a Success Except for Score

It was a great day of family entertainment for folks around Middle Georgia with the Macon Mayhem on Sunday. Trouble was, no one told the Columbus Cottonmouths who escaped the Macon Coliseum with a 3-2 shootout victory.

The win was the first of the season for Columbus (1-4-3) which had lost the previous two games to the Mayhem (2-4-3). After the game fans got to enjoy a public ice skating session with the Mayhem players, the first of five such Sunday Family Funday events this season.

After a scoreless first period, Kyle Shapiro put Columbus on top just after a minute had gone by in the second period. The Mayhem got the next goals from Mark McGowan and Shawn Skelly.

The 2-1 lead held until early in the third period when Chris Rial tied it for Columbus at the 2:03 mark. The evenly matched teams couldn't decide the issue in overtime and even needed two extra rounds of the shootout to break the stalemate.

Ben O'Quinn struck in the first round for Columbus. Connor Toomey and Josh Ranalli tallied for the Mayhem in rounds three and four respectively. Needing a goal to keep his team's hopes alive, Andy Bathgate delivered the tying shootout goal for Columbus.

Neither team scored in the sixth round, and Craig Simchuk was able to sneak the puck past Mayhem goaltender Garrett Bartus. Alexandre LaBonte (who had scored in overtime at Columbus on Tuesday) was unable to get the puck past Brandon Jaeger on his shootout attempt, sealing the win for Columbus.

The Mayhem will host the Fayetteville FireAntz on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
