LAFAYETTE, La.--The Louisiana IceGators finally have the monkey off their back.
After going through a four-game losing streak, the Louisiana IceGators took advantage of playing at home to snap the skid. Dylan Hood scored twice en route to the IceGators 4-2 victory over the Fayetteville FireAntz.
The IceGators and the FireAntz will meet in a rematch Sunday at 3:05 p.m. in Cajundome.
"It's great to get the win," IceGators head coach Drew Omicioli said. "I thought we played well in the first and third (periods), but we had a lapse in the second that allowed them to keep (the game) tight."
Jake Hauswirth gave Louisiana a 1-0 lead late in the first period after he scored off a Jordan Ciccarello assist with 4:16 left in the frame. Nick Lazorko tied the game with 2:31 left in the second period with a short-handed goal off a Zack Carriveau assist.
The IceGators dominated the third period.
Blake Hiatala regained the lead for the IceGators 3:39 into the period. Hood tacked on his two goals in the second half of the frame. Fayetteville cut the Louisiana lead to two goals when Carriveau scored with 1:13 left in the game, but that was the extent of the FireAntz's comeback attempt.
"Fayetteville is well coached and capitalizes on mistakes," Omicioli said. "Luckily tonight in the first and second periods, (goalie Adam) Courchaine held us in the game."
Omicioli says his team will need to bring the same energy and work ethic it showed in the third period of this game into the Sunday rematch.
"I told the guys that anything less than four points this weekend is unacceptable," Omicioli said. "We're halfway there. Now we have to finish our goal by getting another win."
