Fresno Falcons News Release

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno Falcons will open the defense of their first Taylor Cup Championship on the road against the Bakersfield Condors on Saturday, Oct. 12, as the Falcons 2002-2003 schedule was re-released today. The West Coast Hockey League was forced to issue a new schedule due to the decision of the Colorado Gold Kings to cease operations on Aug. 2. The Falcons new schedule will feature 72 games against the other five WCHL teams; Bakersfield, San Diego Gulls, Long Beach Ice Dogs, Idaho Steelheads and Anchorage Aces.

The Falcons will open the home portion of their schedule with a nine-game home stand that kicks off on Friday, Oct. 18, against the Steelheads in a rematch of the teams' thrilling six-game Taylor Cup Finals series from a season ago. That night, the team will raise their Taylor Cup Championship banner to the rafters of Selland Arena as well as receive their championship rings in a night full of festivities. The two teams will square off again on Saturday night before the Falcons close out their opening weekend against the Anchorage Aces on Sunday, Oct. 20.

After their opening nine-game home stand, the team's longest of the season, the team will play 16 of their next 22 games away from Selland Arena. The team's longest road trip of the season begins on Feb. 22 in San Diego, with the first of 11 straight games on the road. The trip will take them to each city in the WCHL over a span of 16 days.

The Falcons will resume their rivalry with San Diego when the Gulls venture into Selland Arena on Tuesday, Oct. 29. Fresno will not find their way to the San Diego Sports Arena until Nov. 12. The Falcons will have to wait until Dec. 7 to reacquaint themselves with the Ice Dogs when they visit Selland Arena for the first time. Other notable dates on this year's schedule include the return of the President's Day matinee game on Monday, Feb. 17, when the Falcons take on the Gulls at 1 p.m. The Falcons will play their final home game of the season on Wednesday, April 2, against the Steelheads and will conclude the regular season three nights later with a weekend set in Long Beach.

Falcons season ticket packages for the upcoming 2002-03 campaign are already on sale beginning as low as $252. Contact the Falcons office for more information at 485-PUCK (7825).
