San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls have signed center Sylvain Deschatelets, the West Coast Hockey League club announced today.

Deschatelets, 22, will begin his third professional season with the Gulls in 2002-03. Last season, Deschatelets played 74 games for the United Hockey League's Adirondack IceHawks, notching 61 points (19g, 42a) and 116 penalty minutes. He also played in one game for the American Hockey League's Springfield Falcons.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 197-pound native of Blainville, Quebec spent his rookie campaign in the East Coast Hockey League with the New Orleans Brass. That season, Deschatelets scored 58 points (25g, 33a) while amassing 106 penalty minutes. His pro career technically began with the Gulls in the 2000 Taylor Cup Playoffs. In seven postseason games with San Diego, Deschatelets scored one goal.

"We're glad to have Sylvain back in San Diego," Gulls head coach and General Manager Steve Martinson said. "He's an all around, complete player with good size and grittiness. I think he will fit in real well this season. And he's a former captain, so his leadership should also play dividends."

Deschatelets captained the Baie Comeau Drakkar in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He spent three seasons with Baie Comeau from 1997-98 to 1999-00. His best numbers came in 1999-00, when he reached the century mark in points (41g, 59a).

The Gulls begin their eighth season in the WCHL Saturday, Oct. 12 versus the Long Beach Ice Dogs. Season ticket packages are currently on sale. Contact a Gulls ticket representative at 619-224-4625 ext. 7 for more information.
