August 16, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Roanoke Express News Release
Roanoke, VA- Roanoke Express Head Coach and General Manager Perry Florio announced today that he has signed defenseman Josh Barker. Barker received his bachelor's degree in Economics from Ivy League Brown University this past May.
The 6'1, 207 pound rookie will add size and toughness to an experienced Roanoke blue line. "Josh has all the makings of becoming an everyday American Hockey League player", said Florio. "He will add strength and toughness in front of our net, and he has great character and work ethic. Josh is yet another important piece in our youth movement and we look forward to his contribution.
Barker, a Swift Current, Saskatchewan native, played the last four seasons for the Brown University Bruins in the ECAC. As a "stay at home" defenseman he captained the Bears his senior season. He was a recipient of the Charles A. Lanigan Trophy for the player who best represents his team on and off the ice, and also the Patrick S. Jones Memorial Trophy for the player who best represented his team through commitment, attitude, and leadership. After his freshman season at Brown, 1998-1999, he won the Kevin R Pope Trophy as the Rookie of the Year, and he was nominated for ECAC Rookie of the Year. Before attending Brown University, Barker played for the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League where he was captain of the team and named a SJHL All Star.
Perry Florio likes the type of person he is getting in Josh Barker. "Josh is a committed, hard working individual. The accolades he has received speak for themselves. Again, following our philosophy this summer of going with younger players, we are adding a solid young man to our community".
The Express open their 2002-2003 home slate on October 18 vs. the Greensboro Generals.
