Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA -The Springfield Falcons got off to a hot start on Saturday night at the Mass Mutual Center but needed overtime to beat the Providence Bruins by a 5-4 score.

Springfield opened the scoring just 1:03 into the tilt when Steven Delisle received a pass from Justin Hache at the point. Delisle took the feed and fired a quick wrist shot on net that was tipped past Zane McIntyre by Greg Carey for his fourteenth of the year. The Falcons then got some stellar goaltending by Marek Langhamer, who made two point blank saves against Frank Vatrano as the Falcons were killing a penalty. Springfield extended their lead later in the period when Steve Downie got his first goal as a Falcon, punching home a rebound past McIntyre.

Corey Potter and Hache each recorded assists on the goal scored at 12:53. More insurance would arrive for the Falcons late in the period when Craig Cunningham found Carey, who riffled his second of the night past McIntyre to make it 3-0 at the 18:39 mark. Dustin Jeffrey would pick up an assist on the power play goal, which was Carey's team leading fifteenth of the season.

The Bruins responded quickly as Colton Hargrove put a rebound past Langhamer. Anton Blidh and Colby Cave notched assists on the goal scored at 19:19.

Providence got the score back within one just 2:06 into the middle frame as Hargrove fired a shot over Langhamer's shoulder. Cave picked up his second point of the night on the goal as he was credited with an assist. After an evenly played stretch, the Falcons restored their two-goal lead as Alex Grant took a feed from Laurent Dauphin and ripped a shot past McIntyre from the point. Phil Lane added an assist on Grant's ninth of the year at 6:48.

The Bruins would again cut the Falcons lead to one as Seth Griffith would score his thirteenth of the season just 1:29 into the third period. Noel Acciari stole the puck from a Philip Samuelsson behind the net and fed Griffith, who beat Langhamer to make it a 4-3 tilt. After pushing hard in the third, Providence finally tied the game when Ben Youds fired a slap shot past Langhamer.

The goal, scored at 12:03, was assisted by Vatrano and Griffith. In overtime, Providence got the first solid chance as Vatrano fired a long shot on net. Langhamer stood tall, however, and slammed the door shut to keep the Falcons alive. Moments later, Downie forced a turnover and fed Samuelsson in the slot. Samuelsson blasted a shot past McIntyre 2:42 into the extra frame to give the Falcons the victory. It was Samuelsson's third of the year to win the game. Langhamer made 33 saves in the victory, which improved his record to 2-2-1 on the season.

McIntyre made 25 saves in the loss and saw his record fall to 6-6-5 for the year.
