Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. â The Springfield Falcons received goals from three rookies in addition to second-year pro Ryan Craig in a 4-2 win over the Lowell Lock Monsters at the Springfield Civic Center on Wednesday night. Center Nick Tarnasky and defenseman Paul Ranger scored for the Falcons in the first period before left wing Adam Henrich tallied in the second. Center Craig Darby registered two assists while netminder Brian Eklund stopped 29 of 31 shots in the win.
The Falcons scored first for the fifth consecutive game when Tarnasky netted a goal 2:02 into the game. The rookie scooped up the rebound of a shot by J.F. Soucy and steered it around Lowell goaltender Brent Krahn for his seventh goal of the season.
Ranger followed to make the score 2-0 at the 13:20 mark with a slap shot from the top of the left circle after Darby drew the puck to him on a face-off. The goal was Ranger's second in as many contests after he scored the game-winner with 1:39 remaining in the Falcons' 4-2 win over the IceCats in Worcester on Sunday.
Springfield held a 15-4 shot advantage after the opening frame.
Lowell got on the board 3:33 into the second period when center Dustin Johner swept the puck in the net during a scramble in front of the Falcons' net. The tally was Johner's fourth of the season since being called up from the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers in early March.
Henrich briefly regained the two-goal lead for the Falcons at 8:45 with a highlight film move to beat Lowell defenseman Allan Rouke before backhanding the puck past Krahn for his 10th marker of his rookie campaign.
However, the Lock Monsters responded on a power play 1:57 later from Carsen Germyn. Defenseman Mike Commodore, after stickhandling to the bottom of the right circle, fed Germyn at the top of the crease, who redirected the puck into the net.
The Falcons converted a four-on-three power play to make the score 6:06 into the third period. On the goal, Craig fed the puck through the slot from the right circle to Darby, who returned the puck to the second-year pro. Craig snapped a shot off the post and in for his team-leading 27th goal of the campaign.
The game became contentious midway through the final frame with a scrum along the boards in the Falcons' zone and re-started in front of the Lowell bench. Sixty minutes in penalties were issued as a result of the melee and Springfield right wing Andre Deveaux and Lowell's Commodore were given game misconducts.
The Falcons finished the game one-for-seven with the man advantage while the Lock Monsters converted one of two power plays.
Lowell outshot the Falcons, 31-29, in the game.
Springfield finished the season series against the third-place Lock Monsters with a record of 3-7-0-0.
The win was the Falcons' second straight win and marked the seventh time in their last nine games that the team has collected points, posting a 4-2-3-0 record over that span.
Eklund collected his 13th victory of the campaign.
The Falcons will visit the Portland Pirates on Friday evening before returning to the Springfield Civic Center for the season home finale against the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday night.
