Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. – The Springfield Falcons were doubled up by the Lowell Lock Monsters, 4-2, at Tsongas Arena on Wednesday. Forwards Ryan Craig and Jason Jaspers each scored and assisted for the Falcons while right wing Evgeni Artukhin collected a pair of assists. Springfield netminder Brian Eklund made 42 saves in the loss.

The Falcons leapt in front with a goal 42 seconds into the game when Craig deposited a rebound into the net for his team-leading 25th goal of the season. Jaspers and Evgeni Artukhin recorded assists on the tally which was the quickest goal to open a game for Springfield this season.

The lead was short lived however as Lowell defenseman Mark Giordano scored from the slot after being fed from the half boards by Carsen Germyn just 1:17 later.

The Falcons converted their fourth power play of the game to take a 2-1 lead 2:02 into the middle frame as Craig, Jaspers, and Artukhin combined again. From behind the net, Craig passed to Artukhin at the side boards who set up Jaspers in front. Jaspers snapped his shot past Lowell netminder Brent Krahn for his ninth goal of the season.

However, the Lock Monsters again responded when center Mike Zigomanis scored the first of three straight Lowell goals at 4:58 of the period. The marker was the 28th of the campaign for Zigomanis.

Seconds after Falcons forward Dennis Packard exited the penalty box to end a Lowell man advantage, left wing Justin Taylor connected from the slot at 10:13. Monsters forward Brantt Myhres recorded his first point of the season with an assist on the goal as his club took advantage of Eklund being knocked down in a collision.

Germyn followed 3:46 later to make the score 4-2 on a shot from the right face-off dot. It was Germyn's sixth goal of the season and third against the Falcons.

Still trailing by two goals and on a late power play, the Falcons pulled Eklund for a sixth attacker with 1:45 remaining in the third period. The club nearly pulled to within a goal, but Craig was robbed by Krahn during a flurry in front of the net.

The Falcons outshot Lowell, 19-12, during the scoreless final frame.

Springfield finished the game one-for-seven on the power play while the club killed off all six of Lowell's opportunities.

Krahn stopped 32 of 34 shots to record his 18th win of the season.

With his two assists in the game, Artukhin extended his scoring streak to four games during which he has registered six points (1g, 5a). Jaspers has posted four points (2g, 2a) over the last three games.

The defeat ended a run of four straight games in which the Falcons had collected at least a point (2-0-2-0). The team's record against the Lock Monsters for the campaign dropped to 2-7-0-0. The clubs will wrap up their season series next Wednesday at the Springfield Civic Center.
