Falcons Allow Four Unanswered Goals in Loss

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Springfield Falcons struck early but could not contain the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in a 4-1 loss on Saturday night.

The Falcons registered the first goal of the game with a rebound tally from Dustin Jeffrey. His tenth of the season was scored just 1:17 into the game with assists from Michael Bunting and Christian Thomas. Josh Archibald tied the game with a breakaway goal against Falcons netminder Niklas Treutle at 6:01. The goal was assisted by Jean-Sebastien Dea and concluded the period's scoring.

Tom Kostopoulos broke the tie with his eighth of the year at the 4:08 mark in the second period. Tim Erixon and Carter Rowney assisted on the goal to give the Penguins a 2-1 lead. Just 40 seconds later, Sahir Gill tallied his second of the year with assists from Reid McNeill and Ty Loney. Four seconds into a power play, the Penguins extended their lead to 4-1 at 7:25. Bryan Rust potted his second of the year with assists from Derrick Pouliot and Rowney. The three-goal flurry from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton gave them a commanding 4-1 lead headed into the final period.

The teams skated to a scoreless third period giving the Falcons a 4-1 loss. Matt Murray turned aside 30 shots to improve to a 13-4-0 record. Treutle stopped 26 shots in the loss to fall to a 6-9-1 record. The Falcons power play was 0-4 on the night while the team allowed one power play goal on two penalties.

The Falcons remain on the road with a 7:15 p.m. faceoff against the Hartford Wolf Pack next Friday night. The Birds return to the Nest next Saturday for a 7 p.m. faceoff against the Providence Bruins. Both games can be heard live on NewsRadio560 WHYN.
