FARGO, N.D. â The Sioux City Explorers got a strong performance from starting pitcher Tony Evans and timely hitting to defeat the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 6-3 on Wednesday night at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo. Sioux City improved to 9-3 with the victory, while Fargo-Moorhead fell to 8-3 on the season.
Evans (2-1) pitched 8.0 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits. He struck out six batters and walked two in earning his second victory of the season. Sean Kramer picked up his league-leading fifth save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. RedHawks starter J.J. Scheving (0-2) took the loss for the RedHawks.
Dan Meier gave the Explorers a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the first inning off Scheving. It was Meier's sixth home run of the season and second of the series. The RedHawks briefly took the lead in the bottom of the third with a three-run inning. Brent Krause scored on a throwing error by Sioux City, and Ruben Salazar singled home Derek Dormanen and Brian Ward to make it 3-1.
The X's bounced right back with a three-run inning of their own. Matt Howe drilled a two-run double and Ian Church added an RBI double of his own for a 5-3 Sioux City lead. The X's added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on Ryan Gripp's RBI triple.
The RedHawks and Explorers will face off in the rubber match of their three-game series on Thursday afternoon at 12:35 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field. Brandon Culp will get the start for Fargo-Moorhead, while Mike Natale will get the call for the Explorers.
