Schaumburg Flyers News Release

WINNIPEG, MB- The Schaumburg Flyers stopped a five-game losing streak on Wednesday, June 1, defeating the Winnipeg Goldeyes 5-0 at CanWest Global Park. Schaumburg LHP Anthony Boughner (2-1) pitched a six-hit shutout on just 90 pitches, the first nine-inning shutout by a Flyer since August 15, 2003. Boughner shut out Fargo in a seven-inning game last season for the only individual shutout of 2004. He struck out three and allowed no walks for the second straight outing.

The Flyers moved to 4-8 while Winnipeg fell to 3-9. Schaumburg also stopped the franchise's nine-game losing streak at Winnipeg, dating back to June 3, 2003.

Boughner retired the Goldeyes in order in six of his nine innings on Wednesday and induced 17 groundball outs in the game. The left-hander was in minor trouble in the third and seventh innings but stranded two men in each inning. No Goldeye reached third base in the game. One night after committing three errors, the Flyers defense played errorless baseball and made several fine plays. Highlight reel efforts were made by 3B Chris Weekly, SS Geoff McCallum and 2B Nelson Gord at different points in the game.

Offensively, eight of the nine Flyers hit safely in an 11-hit attack. Schaumburg scored a pair of two-out runs in the third inning as Jason Fitzgerald scored on a passed ball by Winnipeg C Russ Jacobson and Weekly followed with an RBI single to drive home Eric Cole from second base. The Flyers put the game away in the seventh, scoring three runs and knocking out Winnipeg starter Adam Thomas (0-2). McCallum's RBI single scored Gord and knocked out Thomas after the first three Flyers hit safely. Fitzgerald broke an 0-for-22 slide with a bloop RBI single later in the inning and McCallum scored a second run on the play when Winnipeg CF Mike Forbes committed an error, bobbling the ball. McCallum collided with Jacobson at the plate, jarring the ball loose, but stayed in the game after a hard collision. Rafael Pujols led the hit parade with a 3-for-4 game.

Earlier Wednesday, the Flyers learned that 2B Eddie Romprey will miss at least 10 weeks and possibly the season after breaking his left fibula in Tuesday's game. He also sustained left knee and ankle injuries and will return to Chicago for further evaluation by Flyers doctors on Thursday.

The Flyers will go for two out of three on Thursday in a 12 Noon game at Winnipeg. LHP R.J. Swindle (0-1) will oppose Winnipeg RHP Shawn Sedlacek (0-1). Catch the webcast at flyersbaseball.com.

Notes: Hank Woodman was the last Flyer to pitch a nine-inning shutout, going the distance on a two-hitter on August 15, 2003 in Sioux Falls...He also had the franchise's last win in Winnipeg in June of '03...Woodman now pitches in Taiwan...Schaumburg is now 4-1 when scoring more than four runs, 0-7 when scoring four runs or less this
