
Explorers Clinch Sweep on Sunday

GENEVA, Ill. - The Sioux City Explorers clinched a sweep with a 7-4 victory over the Kane County Atomic Pork Chops on Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field. For the first time this season, the Kane County Cougars sported the "Atomic Pork Chops" moniker.
The Atomic Pork Chops got on the board first against Sioux City starter Jared Wetherbee (1-0). Jimmy Kerrigan led off the inning with a single before reaching second on a wild pitch. Then, TJ Bennett drove in Kerrigan with a single into right-center field to put the 'Chops up 1-0. However, that would be the lone lead of the day for Kane County.
After the first run, it was all Explorers. Sioux City tied the game in the top of the third on a solo home run in the bottom of the third by Jack Kelly off Kane County starter Luke Westphal (0-1). The Explorers then took the lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Matt Lloyd to make it 2-1.
Sioux City added two more in the top of the fifth. Despite not earning a hit in the frame, the Explorers plated two runs thanks to three walks and a hit by pitch to go up 4-1.The X's added three more in the top of the sixth on singles by Vince Fernandez and Miguel Sierra.
Kane County went on to rally in the final two frames. In the bottom of the eighth, an Armond Upshaw sacrifice fly scored Josh Allen to make it 7-2. In the ninth, Cornelius Randolph led off the frame with his fourth hit of the ballgame on a single. After a pair of outs, Allen came to the plate and crushed a ball over the left field wall for a two-run home to make it 7-4. It was Allen's second straight game with a home run. However, the rally came to an end as Francys Peguero struck out Dondrei Hubbard to end the ballgame.
The Atomic Pork Chops will have an off day tomorrow before hitting the road for a three-game series in Winnipeg followed by three games at Gary.
