Ex-Rayz lead Scorps to 2-1 SO win

Two former Corpus Christi Rayz came back to haunt their old team on Wednesday Night as the New Mexico Scorpions out lasted the Rayz 2-1 in a shootout at the American Bank Center. Chris Robertson tied the game in regulation and Tim Vitek was the hero in a shootout with his first goal as a Scorpion providing the game winner. The Rayz picked up points for the seventh time in the last nine games, and went to 13-16-4 on the year. The Rayz improved six points ahead of the idle Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees for second place in the Southeast Division. The Rayz return to the American Bank Center on Friday, January 18th at 7:05pm when they host the Austin Ice Bats on 80's Night, presented by CPL Retail Energy. Individual tickets are on sale now. Neither teams scored in an evenly played opening period. The Scorps outshot the Rayz 8-6 in the frame.

Corpus Christi finally broke the scoreless tie on the power play at 10:49 when Jay Latulippe scored from the right circle. The lead was short lived as New Mexico answered on a Chris Robertson power play goal at 18:45. The Rayz and Scorpions went to the third tied 1-1. New Mexico outshot Corpus Christi 14-11 in the period.

A scoreless third period and overtime led to the ninth shootout of the year for the Rayz. In the shootout, four of vie shooters were stopped for the Rayz, with only Kevin Watters tallying, and Konrad Reeder and Vitek scored for the Scorps.

Tapp made 31 saves on 32 shots and stopped three of five, falling to 13-13-3. Martin made 27 saves on 28 shots improving to 9-6-1. The Rayz went 1-5 on the power play, and the Scorps were 1-5. The Scorps outshot the Rayz 33-28.

The Rayz will conclude their weekend on the road with a Friday Night trip to Amarillo and a Saturday Night visit to Oklahoma City. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center following the All-Star break on Friday, January 18th when they host the Austin Ice Bats on 80's Night, presented by CPL Retail Energy.
