January 9, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Broomfield, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage defeated the Amarillo Gorillas 5-2 tonight at the Broomfield Event Center. Rocky Mountain has played four of five regular season games against Amarillo this season and remains undefeated in the series. Captain Brent Cullaton and Scott Wray led the Rage with one goal and one assist each.
The Rage improved to 23-4-3 (49 points) to remain in the top spot in the Northwest Division and with the top winning percentage in the league (.817). The Amarillo Gorillas fell to 10-18-5 (25 points) for fourth place in the Southwest Division.
After a slow start to the first period, both teams picked up the pace of their game following a slashing call on the Rage at 13:47 of the period. Despite a slew of scoring chances by both teams in the second half, Rage goaltender Guy St. Vincent and Gorillas goaltender Dan McWhinney led the way keeping both teams scoreless.
In the second period, Amarillo defenseman Trevor Read earned the first goal of the night off of a pass from defenseman Trevor Socholotuk. The Rage tied it up when Captain Brent Cullaton skated coast-to-coast and slipped it past the pad of Amarillo goaltender Dan McWhinney at 12:53 for his seventh goal of the season and team-leading 45th point.
Three minutes later, Rocky Mountain's David Morelli shot a long wrister on the pads of McWhinney. Chip Dunleavy picked up the long rebound, skated to the other side of the crease and scored to give the Rage the lead.
Amarillo answered back at 5:37 of the third period to tie the game. Jason Chafe shot in a redirect for a powerplay goal.
Not until 14:47, Rage's Trevor Weisgerber fired a slap shot through the circles for an unassisted goal to give the Rage the lead for his 12th goal of the season.
Amarillo fought back with a couple of back-to-back scoring chances from Trevor Socholotuk and Bill Vandermeer, but Rage goaltender Guy St. Vincent stopped both.
Scott Wray picked up a rebound pass from Cullaton at 18:19 and extended Rocky Mountain's lead 4-2. Daymen Rycroft added an empty net goal to cap off scoring.
The Rage returns to action Friday (Jan. 11) when they host the Wichita Thunder at the Broomfield Event Center.
