Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen, TX - First half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (44-42, 15-21) starter Kenny Evoniuk (2-3) no-hit the defending United League Champion Alexandria Aces (56-31, 29-9) through six and a third innings before settling for a one-hit shutout in an 8-0 victory in game one of tonight's doubleheader (two seven inning games) at Harlingen Field.

Richard Paz hit a hot-shot single up the middle with one out in the seventh to break up the no-no. Evoniuk walked the bases loaded on eight pitches before getting Palmer Karr Jr. to ground into a game-ending double play.

The only other base runner against Evoniuk was Josh Tranum, who walked in the second, but was then erased on a Karr double play.

Evoniuk struck out five in the masterpiece.

Omar Bramasco hit a one out double against Luis Galarraga (7-4). With Miguel Peguero batting, catcher Kevin Macilvane committed a passed ball. Bramasco went to third and the throw went into left field, allowing Bramasco to score and make it 1-0.

Brian Nichols led off the second with a double and Luany Sanchez got hit by a pitch. Sam McLain came up and was first pitching swinging with the runners in motion, chopping the ball up the middle and through to center field for an RBI single. Kevin Griffin followed with a grounder to short which Richard Paz doubled, turning it into an RBI-fielder's choice as Sanchez scored to make it 3-0.

The WhiteWings blew it open in the fourth with four unearned runs. John Beal and Bub Bergstrom reached on back-to-back one-out bunt-singles. Bramasco walked to load the bases and Peguero hit a grounder up the middle that hit off of Paz's glove to send home Beal. One batter later, Nichols hit a bases-clearing double to make it 7-0.

The WhiteWings final run came in the sixth when Nichols hit an RBI-ground out to send Peguero home and make it 8-0.

Game two will start in about 20 minutes. Julian Williams (5-4) will face Brian Bunyan (3-1).
