Everett Silvertips News Release
Everett, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips defeated the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 in overtime on Friday night, November 16th, inside of Comcast Arena at the Everett Events Center. Kyle Beach scored a pair of second period goals to erase a 2-0 deficit, and Zack Dailey won the game by scoring shorthanded in the extra period. The 6,359 fans on hand watched as the Silvertips finally ended their four game losing streak and by doing so improved their record to 12-10-0-1 (25 pts.) keeping them third place in the U.S. Division.
The finale of the game was quite opposite of how it all began. Kelowna got on the scoreboard just 40-seconds into the contest when Colin Long's shot took a couple of hops and fooled Everett goaltender Leland Irving. The home team matched the Rockets in shots 8-8 throughout the period's midway point, but the Rockets would make themselves temporarily even more distant in the goals category.
At the 14:28 mark, Irving stood little chance against a Kelowna rush that resulted in a Jamie Benn one timer from deep in the right circle. That was the end though for the Rockets offense and the Silvertips took over from there. Beach may have received credit for his team's first goal, but Zach Hamill did most of the work.
Hamill took control of the puck in the defensive zone and skated down the right wing side; out dueling the Kelowna blue-liners in the process. He continued to carry the puck deep into the attacking zone and behind the goal line before spinning a pass out into the slot to meet a rushing Beach. The one-timer shot beat Rockets goaltender Kristofer Westblom at 9:21.
Beach's goal now gives him 16 goals to go with 19 assists for a total of 35 points. Only three times this season has he been held off of the score sheet. As for Hamill, his stats improve to 7 goals and 21 assists including points in 15 of his last 17 games. However, Beach still had more up his sleeve and performed it with style.
He picked up a loose puck that had been initiated by Shane Harper in the neutral zone and headed into the Kelowna zone. Beach had to skate his way around the Rockets defense and into the right circle. Not quite cleanly clear of his defender he began falling to the ice but still managed to get off a shot. His backhander from just above the right edge of the crease cleared the left shoulder of Westblom and snuck underneath the crossbar at 12:23.
The Silvertips had a chance to take their first regulation lead of the night when Harper was awarded a penalty shot at 2:02 of the third period, however, he was unable to get his attempt through Westblom. Things then changed from offense to defense for Everett as Kelowna had three separate power play opportunities including 1:24 of a two man advantage.
Everett kept things slow and after several miscellaneous stoppages they had killed off the first penalty. With plenty of time still remaining on Kelowna's ensuing one man advantage, Irving was called upon to make his biggest stop of the night - a right pad save through traffic with just under half the period still to go. It was the sixth and final power play for Kelowna though that set up the dramatics.
Carrying over from regulation, the Rockets advantage only produced one attempted shot on goal which was blocked. That eventually led to Dailey winning control of the puck and racing his defender down the ice. Once at the left circle he began cutting in towards the goal with his opponent battling the whole way. Much like Beach's first goal, Dailey was falling to the ice but managed to get off a shot that Westblom couldn't do anything about and the Silvertips were finally back on the winning side of things.
The Silvertips now set their focus on tomorrow night's home game against the Vancouver Giants at 7:05 p.m. Their weekend rounds out with a trip north of the border to take on the Chilliwack Bruins. Game time for that contest has been pushed back from its original start time; the puck is now scheduled to drop at 7:00 p.m.
