Everett Silvertips News Release
KENNEWICK - Seven different Silvertips found the back of the net as Everett stayed unbeaten in exhibition play with an 8-2 victory over the Portland Winterhawks Friday afternoon at the Toyota Center. The game was the first of two for Everett at a preseason tournament hosted by the Tri-City Americans; the second of which takes place against the Kootenay Ice Saturday at 11 am.
Playing on his 20th birthday, veteran forward Josh Winquist scored two goals and added an assist for the Silvertips, who also got three-point efforts from Ivan Nikolishin, Manraj Hayer and Brayden Low on a goal and two assists each. Tyler Sandhu (1g/1a), Waltteri Hopponen (1g/1a) and Matt Pufahl (2a) also chipped in multiple points as Everett rolled to its fourth preseason win in as many tries.
Portland struck first in the contest on a powerplay goal from Dominic Turgeon at the 11:18 mark. The 'Tips responded a few minutes later with a three-goal burst late in the period, including two scores just 23 seconds apart. Carson Stadnyk evened things up for Everett with his third goal of the preseason, which was immediately followed by a score from Ivan Nikolishin to give the Silvertips a 2-1 edge. Tyler Sandhu then notched another tally just over two minutes later as the 'Tips carried a 3-1 lead into the locker room.
Everett kept coming on strong in the second, going up 4-1 on a goal from Waltteri Hopponen just 1:25 into the stanza. Josh Winquist put home the rebound of a Noah Juulsen shot midway through the middle period to give the 'Tips a 5-1 advantage through 40 minutes.
The offensive explosion wasn't over yet however, as Manraj Hayer scored seven minutes into the third. After assisting on that goal, Brayden Low wired a wrist shot past Portland goalie Adin Hill for one of his own about six minutes later to give the Silvertips a 7-1 cushion. Winquist tipped-in his second goal of the day for an eighth Everett score and Chase De Leo tallied in the final minutes for the Winterhawks as the 'Tips finished off the 8-2 victory.
Daniel Cotton finished the day with 31 saves on 33 shots to earn the win in goal for Everett, which outshot Portland 36-33 in total. Hill made 28 saves while taking the loss for the 'Hawks. The Silvertips were 0 for 1 on the powerplay, while the Winterhawks converted 1 of 2 opportunities.
The Silvertips will now take on the Kootenay Ice Saturday at 11:00 am in their second and final game at the Tri-City tournament. Everett will then return home to prepare for the final weekend of exhibition play, which features a home-and-home set against the Seattle Thunderbirds starting Friday, September 13 at Comcast Arena.
