Evans Secures Batting Title in 10-8, 13 Inning Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY- The Binghamton Mets scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings but a two-run home run in the 13th inning from Christin Stewart gave the Erie SeaWolves a 10-8 win, Monday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Phillip Evans went 4-for-6 and secured the Eastern League batting title.

Trailing 8-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Stefan Sabol smacked a leadoff single. Evans then singled Sabol to second before a Champ Stuart sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Amed Rosario followed with a two-run single, tying the game at eight to force extra innings.

With two outs in the 11th, Evans chopped a ground ball up the middle that squeaked into center for a base hit. It made him 4-for-6 and vaulted his batting average to .33518, .00012 ahead of Portland's Aneury Tavarez for the league lead.

The SeaWolves dealt the decisive blow in the 13th. Dominic Ficociello doubled and Christin Stewart cranked a two-run homer to right, vaulting Erie to a 10-8 lead.

Erie did the bulk of its damage in the second inning. Mickey Jannis hit Corey Jones with a pitch then walked Mike Gerber. Ficociello bounced a grounder up the middle that Jannis fielded and threw home but Jones slid in safely. Stewart later blasted a double, scoring Gerber and Ficociello. Harold Castro smacked an RBI single and Anthony Gose capped the inning with a two-run single, giving the SeaWolves a 6-0 lead.

Binghamton got one back in the bottom of the second as L.J. Mazzilli drove a one-out triple to right-center. Raywilly Gomez later scored him with a single to put the B-Mets on the board.

In the third, Evans cranked a leadoff double to the wall in left. He later scored on a Matt Oberste sacrifice fly, making the score, 6-2.

Erie struck again in the fourth. Gustavo Nunez doubled and Gose singled him in, extended the Erie lead to 7-2.

The B-Mets cut into the deficit in the fifth when Champ Stuart singled and took second on a throwing error. Amed Rosario followed with a single that scored Stuart to make it 7-3.

Binghamton got back to work in the seventh as Gomez led off with a double and Stefan Sabol followed with a double to the wall in left-center, scoring Gomez. With runners at first and third, Stuart bounced into a double play that scored Sabol but effectively killed the rally. After seven, the B-Mets trailed, 7-5.

They would continue the comeback in the eighth. Oberste led off with a walk and scored on a Maikis De La Cruz groundout that made it 7-6.

A Gose home run in the ninth extended the Erie lead to 8-6.

Evans was 4-for-6 with a double and three runs scored, his second four-hit game of the season. Rosario went 3-for-6 with three RBI and Sabol was 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Binghamton finished its season at 63-77 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2012.
