Eugene's Three Homers Overpower Hops 6-3

June 30, 2021 - Northwest League (NWL)
Hillsboro Hops News Release

Wednesday afternoon, the Hillsboro Hops extended their losing streak to nine games against the Eugene Emeralds. 26th overall pick of the 2019 draft Blake Walston -- was also on the Hops 2019 championship team while still at the Short Season A level -- struggled in his first start in High A.

The Em's flexed their muscles right out of the gate, drilling two solo homers of Walston ( Will Wilson , 10th & Armani Smith , 1st). The Hops answered back in their half of the first. Jorge Barrosa led off with a walk and stole second and third base. After stealing third, Barrosa came into score on a throwing error by catcher Ricardo Genoves .

Despite recording two quick outs in the second, Walston continued to struggle and give up the long ball. Smith homered (2) for the second time -- a three-run blast this time -- to cap off a four-run inning for the Em's. Walston was pulled after just 1.2 innings, allowing three long balls and leaving the game down 6-1

Hillsboro got back a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Eduardo Diaz . The story of the later innings for the Hops was the return of Drey Jameson . Coming off the Injured List (IL) today, Jameson recorded four innings of shutout ball. The right hander walked two and struck out three, while not allowing a hit. Jameson's effort would be in vain as the Hops fell 6-3 to the Em's.

Hillsboro (19-29) will face off against Eugene (32-17) again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. The game will air on Rip City Radio AM with the pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m.
