Ethan Skender Continues Hot Streak During Missions Opening Loss to Amarillo

SAN ANTONIO - Some sloppy fielding from the Missions put them in an early deficit as they trailed 5-0 after four innings of play. The Missions added four runs but surrendered two big innings to Amarillo. They drop the series opener by a final score of 9-4.

The Amarillo Sod Poodles took an early lead after capitalizing on a Missions error. Facing Pedro Avila, Geraldo Perdomo drew a one-out walk. Perdomo advanced to third base after a throwing error from Avila on a failed pick-off attempt. With Perdomo at third, Stone Garrett drove him in with a sacrifice fly.

An error in the second inning would cost the Missions another run. With one out in the inning, Dominic Canzone hit a pop-up on the infield to Olivier Basabe. Eguy Rosario called him off at the last second which resulted in a drop and an error for Rosario. A wild pitch from Avila moved Canzone into scoring position. He ended up scoring on an RBI double from Dominic Miroglio. Amarillo improved their lead to 2-0.

Amarillo put a crooked number on the board in the top of the fourth inning. The Sod Poodles added three more runs to make it a 5-0 ballgame. The inning started with Dominic Fletcher getting hit by a pitch. Dominic Canzone lifted a fly ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run. Eduardo Diaz was also hit by a pitch. Miroglio advanced him to third base on a single center field. Diaz came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Ryder Jones.

The Missions scored their runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs in the inning, Basabe doubled to center field and advanced to third base after a throwing error from Geraldo Perdomo. Esteury Ruiz was hit by a pitch to extend the inning. Ethan Skender extended his hitting streak with an RBI single to right field to score Basabe. Ruiz came around to score after a throwing error from Fletcher in right field. The Missions trailed 5-2.

After scoring a run in the top of the seventh inning, the Sod Poodles had their second big inning of the night when they scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning. Facing Mason Fox, who was recently activated from the Development List, Canzone drew a lead-off walk and Diaz hit a base hit. After recording a strikeout, Ryder Jones crushed a three-run home run. Buddy Kennedy's seventh inning RBI and Jones' homer made it a 9-2 Sod Poodles lead.

Pedro Avila records the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) in four innings of work. Jordan Humphreys pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of Avila. James Reeves allowed one earned run 1.1 innings of work. Fox was on the hook for three earned runs in one inning of work. Infielder Kelvin Melean pitched a scoreless ninth inning for San Antonio.

The Missions put together a rally in the ninth inning and plated two runs. Juan Fernandez and Agustin Ruiz began the inning with back-to-back singles. Basabe reached base on a fielder's choice and advanced Fernandez to third base. After a strike out, Skender drove in his second run of the night with an RBI single. Basabe came around to score after an RBI single from Rosario.

With the loss, San Antonio falls to 48-54 on the season

The San Antonio Missions continue their seven-game series against the Amarillo Sod Poodles on Wednesday, September 1st. The two teams will play a double-header beginning at 5 p.m. Each game will be seven innings and game two will begin after a brief intermission following game one.

Right-hander Brandon Komar (1-3, 3.60) is scheduled to pitch game one for the Missions against right-hander Ryne Nelson (2-2, 3.63) for Amarillo. For game two, right-hander Sam McWilliams (1-1, 7.36) is scheduled to start against left-hander Kenny Hernandez (1-2, 6.00).

The San Antonio Missions are the Double-A affiliate for the San Diego Padres. This is the 115th professional season for the San Antonio Missions.
