Winston-Salem Dash News Release
Kinston, NC - Paulo Espino was sharp on the mound and Adam Davis was clutch at the plate in helping Kinston defeat Winston-Salem 5-2 on Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium. The Indians victory evened the series at a game apiece and snapped Winston-Salem's seven-game winning streak over Kinston.
Espino (3-5) held the Dash to one unearned run on three hits in six strong innings. He also stuck out six and collected his third win of the season with two coming against Winston-Salem. Davis paced the Indians offense with two hits and three RBI, including a game-changing single with the bases-loaded and two outs in the third inning.
The Dash scored an unearned run in the first inning when center fielder Justin Greene reached on a fielding error by the Indians shortstop. First baseman Jimmy Gallagher followed with a double and third baseman Brent Morel contributed a run-scoring ground out to take a 1-0 lead. Kinston used an RBI ground out by Lonnie Chisenhall in the bottom of the first inning to knot the score at one.
The Indians grabbed their first lead of the series in the bottom of the third inning when Davis delivered a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to put Kinston on top 3-1. Earlier in the inning, Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards hit Ole Sheldon with a pitch to load the bases. Edwards and Sheldon exchanged words as both dugouts emptied. The umpires and coaches quickly separated the players and resolved the skirmish.
Davis struck again as he and Ronald Rivas added two-out, RBI singles in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the Indians advantage to 5-1. Shortstop Greg Paiml added an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Dash, who has scored just two runs in each of the first two games of this series.
Edwards (2-2) only worked 4.2 innings and surrendered five runs on eight hits to suffer the loss.
These two clubs will conclude their three-game on Thursday night at Grainger Stadium. Winston-Salem will send LHP Wander Perez (1-1, 4.05) to the mound, while Kinston will counter with RHP Mike McGuire (0-2, 7.53). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Winston-Salem returns to Wake Forest Baseball Park on Friday, July 24 when they open a six-game home stand with the first of three against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Dash will host a fireworks extravaganza following Friday night's game and all tickets for Saturday's contest against the Pelicans are only $5 in advance and include a FREE Dash hat. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Single-game tickets can be purchased online at www.wsdash.com or by calling the Dash office at (336) 714-2287.
