Lancaster Stormers News Release
Walner Espinal found a way to endear himself to his new fan base.
The recently acquired utility infielder, making his first start for the York Revolution, launched a two-run homer off the left field "Arch Nemesis" in the bottom of the 10th inning on Thursday night as the Revs defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers, 9-8.
Lancaster had been within two outs of a series sweep when the winning blow was delivered.
In the top of the tenth, Devon Torrence delivered pinch runner Jared Lakind with a single to center, giving the 'Stormers an 8-7 lead. Blake Gailen was hit by a pitch, and Caleb Gindl moved the runners with a sacrifice, but Brandon Fry (1-1), got Melvin Mercedes to ground to third with Torrence out in a rundown. Nick Shumpert was retired on a 4-3 conversion off a dropped liner to end the inning.
Jordan McCrum (0-1), who had pitched a perfect ninth, except for an error, struck out Andrew Dundon for the first out in the bottom of the tenth before Espinal sent the winning blow onto Arch Street.
Lancaster had taken a 4-1 lead through the first three innings on a two-run single and two-run homer by Trayvon Robinson. York answered with two in the fourth, then after an RBI double by Mercedes in the top of the seventh, grabbed the lead with four in the bottom of the inning.
Carlos Castro belted a three-run homer to right for a 6-5 lead, and Dundon added an RBI single later in the frame.
Torrence singled in a run in the eighth, and Blake Allemand tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth off closer Jim Fuller.
Lancaster heads to Long Island to open a three-game series on Friday. Andro Cutura (3-1) will pitch for the Barnstormers against Joe Iorio (2-0). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, starting at 6:30.
NOTES: Mercedes had his eighth multi-hit game of the season...McCrum had not allowed an earned baserunner in eight batters over two appearances until the homer by Espinal...Augie Sylk started for the Barnstormers on his 23rd birthday..
