Eskimos announce 2009 schedule
Published on February 3, 2009 under Canadian Football League (CFL)
Edmonton Elks News Release
(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos will kick off the 2009 CFL regular season at home against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Esks made CFL history as the first "crossover" team to win a playoff game when they defeated the Bombers in the '08 CFL East Division Semi-Final. Edmonton and Winnipeg last met in the season opener two years ago in a game that ended in a thrilling 39-39 overtime tie. Before that, the two teams had not matched up in a season opener since 1983.
There will be four installments this season in the annual Battle of Alberta. The Esks will see the defending Grey Cup champion Stampeders for the first time on August 13th at Commonwealth Stadium. The annual Labour Day Classic in Calgary moves from its traditional afternoon kickoff to a 5:30pm start.
The Esks' regular season home schedule features five Thursday night games, three Friday evenings and a Saturday match-up.
Eskimo Director of Communications and Marketing Dave Jamieson says, "With seven 7 o'clock start times it's a very fan friendly home schedule. Two games against the defending Grey Cup champions and a Saturday afternoon against Saskatchewan will be very hot tickets this year."
